St Kilda Triathlon CLUB Coach on Guiding Triathletes Toward Self-Discovery

Coach Steve Davis is a Melbourne Triathlon Club Coach at St Kilda Triathlon Club and Davey Black Triathlon and has been voted the Triathlon Australia Coach of the Year. This week we chatted to Coach Steve about what lies within a person to help make them the best version of their athletic selves.

As a coach in the world of triathlon, I've had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the transformative journey athletes undertake. Triathlon isn't just about crossing finish lines; it's a profound exploration of one's capabilities and inner strength. Amidst the external competition and adrenaline-charged races, I firmly believe that the most significant contest is the one athletes face within themselves.

Understanding the Triathlon

Triathlon is a multifaceted sport that demands athletes excel in swimming, cycling, and running, while seamlessly transitioning between disciplines. Each segment presents its own challenges, testing the physical, mental, and emotional resilience of athletes. Yet, it's within these challenges that the true spirit of triathlon emerges.

The External Competition

In the realm of triathlon, athletes often find themselves immersed in the excitement of competing against others. The thrill of overtaking opponents in the swim, maintaining a strong position on the bike, or summoning a burst of speed in the run is undeniably exhilarating. However, as a triathlon coach, I encourage athletes to recognise that while external competition has its place, the most profound battles are fought within.

The True Competition

Beyond podium finishes and personal bests lies the heart of triathlon: the competition against oneself. As a coach, I emphasize the importance of this internal struggle – the relentless pursuit of self-improvement, the courage to confront doubts, and the determination to push beyond perceived limits.

Triathlon serves as a mirror reflecting an athlete's deepest fears and greatest aspirations. It's in the solitary moments of training when doubts creep in and fatigue sets in that the true competition unfolds. As a coach, I guide athletes through this journey, urging them to embrace discomfort as a catalyst for growth and to find strength in vulnerability.

The Journey of Self-Discovery

Triathlon isn't just about physical prowess; it's a journey of self-discovery and personal growth. As a coach, I witness athletes unearth reservoirs of resilience they never knew existed, confront their inner demons, and emerge stronger than ever before. Every setback becomes an opportunity for learning, every challenge a chance for growth.

In the world of triathlon coaching, I've come to understand that the true victory lies not in outrunning others but in surpassing the limits we set for ourselves. As athletes dive into the waters, pedal through the miles, and pound the pavement, I remind them that the ultimate competition is the one they face within. As a coach, my greatest reward is seeing athletes discover their inner strength, push beyond their perceived limitations, and emerge as champions not only on the course but in life.
